E. Roy Myers founded the company in 1947. Initially called the E. Roy Myers Company, Roy brought many years of controls experience and knowledge to the representative business. He was a Purdue University graduate with a Mechanical Engineering Degree and had previously worked for Mead Paper, Bailey Instrument and E. I. DuPont DeNemours. His last position prior to entering the "Rep" business was Superintendent of Instrumentation at DuPont Belle Works in Charleston, West Virginia.
In 1947 there were no super highways and covering a four state territory (Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee) was quite a challenge. Leaving on Sundays and returning home Friday or Saturday to do the "paper work" and catch up on the family activities kept him quite busy. In those days he could drive all day just to call on one customer. However, industrial process plants were being built throughout the Ohio river valley as well as the Tennessee river valley areas.
The company survived those first few "lean" years and began to prosper. Honesty, integrity, hard work and dedication to customer service was rewarded. The E. Roy Myers Company name became known as a source for quality instrumentation products. It was soon obvious that an associate was needed and Roy looked no further than the desk next to his! He had subleased "desk space" to a young energetic man by the name of Robert A. Henley. He observed that Bob was achieving success as a salesman for Surface Combustion. Besides that, Bob was a Purdue grad and Roy decided to hire him.
Bob Henley went to work for Roy in 1952. They "clicked!" The business continued to grow and it was decided that they would become partners. The company was incorporated as Myers & Henley, Inc. in 1960 and moved to new space near the University of Cincinnati. As the business continued growing, Roy's nephew, Jerry Myers, was hired in 1967. Jerry's background had been with Byron Jackson Pumps, a Division of Borg Warner Corp., in inside sales and customer service. Jerry brought youth and quiet enthusiasm to Myers & Henley.
A few years later, as Roy neared retirement, Jim Morgan was hired. Jim has a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Cincinnati and previously worked for Procter & Gamble and the General Electric Company. He brought a wealth of insight and knowledge about how the real world works and how to get the job done.
Soon after, Dave Gulden was also hired. Dave's years of experience as a regional manager with Jordan Valve, a Division of Richards Industries has served him and Myers & Henley well. Customers testify to his abilities to "take good care of them."
Bob Henley assumed the leadership role after Roy Myers retired and in 1981 moved the company to a new office/warehouse in the northern Cincinnati suburb of Springdale. With larger more appropriate facilities to serve customers, Myers & Henley decided to concentrate on the Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky areas. Although withdrawing from the Tennessee market was a natural thing to do, it was also leaving behind a piece of our history.
We've enjoyed having several excellent secretaries over the years, but none more willing to work and "do the job right" than Linda Thomas. Linda joined Myers & Henley in 1982.
In January, 1990, Bob Henley retired to spend more time with his family and grandchildren. Jerry Myers followed Bob as president and guided Myers & Henley over the next decade. With technology creating new ways to communicate and do business, this was a daunting challenge which Jerry ably fulfilled. In January, 2001, Jerry Myers decided he had postponed other interests long enough and retired from Myers & Henley.
With hopes of continuing the reputation of honesty and integrity initiated by our founders, Jim Morgan succeeds as president and is looking forward to leading Myers & Henley into the new millennium.
